The Mauritanian: Can innocence guarantee freedom?
Welcome to Sajjanpur! >> Review and Trailer
The story of a village called Sajjanpur narrated by the village letter writer. It picks up various issues like goondaraj, political scenario in villages, inter-caste marriages, problem of illiteracy (the fact that the definition of a literate in India is such that a good %age of literates can only sign and read their names, no more), and so on.
Rating: Red - a good-hearted attempt to bring forward the various problems faced by the villages in India (like a 23 hour powercut!) in a light-hearted way. When you try to do something that is mid-way, you falter. Shyam Benegal dared to do what Shahrukh Khan inspite of being the current king of Bollywood did not dare to do (Swades was serious business). And, he faltered. It brings out what it was meant to. But its so slow that Atal Behari Vajpayee could finish reading his book out loud before the movie finishes(atleast that's what I felt).
