Smugglers steal a baby macaw from Rio De Janeiro but the box falls somewhere close to Moose Lake, Minnesota. Linda finds him and raises him - he is Blu. While Linda grows to become a book shop owner, Blu grows into a domesticated and intelligent bird.

An ornithologist called Tulio tells Linda that Blu is the last male of his species and that the last female, Jewel, is in Rio - and invites them.

Will Rio be able to meet and impress the girl of his dreams?
