Sometime, in the 16th century, Veronica Franco from Venice fell in love with Marco Venier. However, she could not marry him as she could not afford the dowry. She was left broken.

Her mother suggested she might be able to get Marco back as a lover if she take up the family business of a courtesan. She initially hesitated, but when she realised that being a courtesan opened a world for her - one that was restricted for the ladies, she agreed.

Soon she was the most popular courtesan - one loved and lusted by the most powerful men in Venice.
